Verdi’s Ernani
American soprano Angela Meade, whose rise to fame was chronicled in the 2008 documentary The Audition, steps into the spotlight as Elvira, a noblewoman pursued by three men. Meade, whose extraordinary vocal ability has earned her comparisons to Golden Age talents, is making her first Live in HD appearance.
Italian tenor Marcello Giordani, who starred in the Live in HD transmissions of La Damnation de Faust, La Fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Simon Boccanegra, and Turandot, sings the title role of Ernani, an honorable bandit in love with Elvira.
Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings his first-ever performances in the pivotal role of Don Carlo, the monarch who wants Elvira for himself.
Ferruccio Furlanetto, who received extraordinary critical acclaim for his performance as King Philip in the Live in HD transmission of Don Carlo, sings another famous Verdi bass role, as Elvira’s older suitor, Don Rey Gomez de Silva.
Marco Armiliato, who led the hit Met premiere production of Anna Bolena earlier this season, returns to lead a thrilling account of Verdi’s exciting early opera. -
